Restaurateur Calls On Websitecop After Passing Off Issue

In September a Restaurant owner in Hampstead, North London, discovered by accident that her business number had been confused with another restaurant. This only came to light when a party of 12 people turned up at her restaurant claiming they had booked. This was brought to the attention of Websitecop, and after some extensive searching it was discovered that some one had placed ads on three, free to use, websites promoting London Cuisine. What they had actually done was copied all the information from the owners restaurant website, including pictures, reviews, menu and drinks list, making their ads appear genuine. The only thing that wasn't genuine, was the phone number which turned out, in all three cases, to be another restaurant of the same theme, who didn't have a website of their own. Websitecop gathered all the relevant information and on instruction, instructed a digital intellectual property solicitor to act and to instigate proceedings against this other restaurant. The matter was settled after one letter from the solicitor and the relevant website administrators removed the offending ads.

Same Restaurateur Suspects Email Scam. Confirmed by Websitecop !

This is an unsolicited email that was received by an Ethiopian Restaurant in Hampstead North London:

Good Day,
I am Mr. Owen Wright CEO Alpha research institute Uk, I want to book dinner for myself and other board members in your Restaurant.
Kindly confirm these dates and permit our reservation .
Reservation Date: 26th Jan 2008- 1st Feb 2008
No of person: 10 persons
Arrival time: 6:30 PM per day
Payment Type: Credit Card Only (I hope you have a credit card charging machine {POS})
Please confirm if you have the availability and provide me with the total cost of the dinner for 10 people in 7days,Then we will make an advance payment to hold the
booking.
I await your swift response.

In good faith, the owner of the restaurant replied after they had obtained a phone number. ( At this point we would like to point out the the number given, after our research, turned out to be an 0701 Number that's a global network number and cannot be traced. The IP addresses returned first Ottawa Canada and on the second email somewhere in Nigeria ) and returned the call. Their connection was bad and very little conversation was heard.
Then follows the second email:

Hello ?????,
Sorry for the poor network that interrupted our telephone conversation. What i wanted to state to you was that 40 GBP ( It was actually quoted at £14.00 per head) Per person is ok by us. Get back to me with the total cost for ten person for seven days. The total cost will exclude beverages of course, we shall settle the cost of beverages after each meal.

The Restaurant owner then returned the email correcting the price per head and asked for confirmation of the booking. The Next email was the last thing she heard:

Hello,
Thanks for your kind email, After my discussion with some members today, We concluded that you can help us with our payment arrangement since you have a credit card facility to run the charges of the payment, we have concluded to make an advance deposit payment of £980.00, by sending you a Visa card to charge the amount.

We also have concluded arrangement with a transport and logistic agent who is going to take care of our transport and any other form of logistic needed.we decided to send him an advance payment so that he could be able to speed up his arrangement in other to meet up with our time frame.But unfortunately he runs a private firm and does not have a credit card facility to process the charges on the credit card, and moreover we also decided not to share the credit card details with a third party .

So once you are in receipt of the credit card detail, you are required/authorized to:
*Charge the total amount of £6180.00 from the card,
*Deduct the amount of £980.00 as your deposit and
*Then forward the balance of £5200.00 to the agent whose information will be forwarded to you as soon as you complete the charges.

We also want you to mention the service charges,so that we can include it in the total payment that you will charge from our credit card.
We want you to confirm this arrangement and provide us with:
1)Your Full name,
2)address and
3)cell/phone number.
We also hope that you will offer us the best service.

Are you getting the picture? Check out the punctuation and the use of, or not, of capital letters. The willingness to pay over the odds and the requirement to forward monies to be paid to a third party on the grounds that they don't wish to reveal their credit card details to anyone but you! What happens after this is the third party money ( In this case £5200)due, will have to be repaid to Mr Owen Wright as they cancelled their transport arrangements ! There in Lays The Scam !

When I first saw the original email from the so called CEO, it started with "I am Owen Wright".... not the start of a letter you would expect from a CEO..... I Rest My Case..... Keep your eyes open and if the grammar is not right or there is the slightest suggestion that all is not what it seems EMAIL WEBSITECOP AND WE'LL CHECK IT OUT !!

We would require a set menu from you which would be based on our budget of $50 per person per day. While making the menu, please note that we have 4 vegeterians in our group and include a menu to accomodate them. The rest of us eat a variety of food, so we encourage you to use your discretion and make the menu and email or fax me for approval.
